About

Our Mission Statement

2nd Street Community Church – spiritual seekers cooperating with God and each other to become devoted followers of Jesus Christ.

Purpose Statement

2nd Street Community Church is a safe and accepting place – both for those in the beginning stages of seeking spiritual truth rooted in Jesus Christ, as well as for those already in a faith-relationship with God and growing in the journey of becoming devoted followers of Jesus Christ.

The natural families we're born into are supposed to help us grow up and thrive. Likewise, the spiritual families we're yoked with are to equip and encourage us to come into a relationship with Jesus Christ and begin the journey of taking on His character (learning to live into His thoughts, His words, and His actions), so that we can then begin to live out the will of God in ways big and small. 2nd Street Community Church is committed to being this kind of safe, accepting, equipping, and encouraging church.

We Value

LOVE ...

We commit to model the love and acceptance of Jesus Christ to everyone – all people are valuable to us, because all people are valuable to God (JOHN 15:12-13; LUKE 5:30-32; LUKE 15; MATTHEW 18:14; FIRST THESSALONIANS 3:12; FIRST PETER 1:22).

COMMUNITY...

We believe healthy churches are built on a foundation of community groups where caring, with-God, family-like relationships are formed and tended to (ACTS 2:42-47).

AUTHENTICITY...

We long to be an authentic church where, as trust in one another and in God is built, people will feel safe to let down their guard and reveal who they really are without fear of rejection (LUKE 18:9-14).

SEEKING...

We desire to be a church where all people – those in relationship with Jesus Christ and those who've not yet taken that step of faith – are encouraged and equipped to become life-long seekers of God (MATTHEW 6:33; ROMANS 15:7; PSALM 105:4; ACTS 17:27-28).

TRUTH...

We seek to study, teach, and live out Biblical truth in ways that are consistent, uncompromising, creative, and culturally relevant (FIRST CORINTHIANS 9:19-23; FIRST JOHN 5:6-8; JOHN 16:12-15; JOHN 14:6).

GROWTH...

We encourage spiritual conversations and spiritual growth; believing that living out God’s will begins as we come into a relationship with Jesus Christ – taking on His thoughts, His words, and His actions (FIRST PETER 2:2-3).

SERVING...

We challenge people to discover and use their spiritual gifts to serve God, one another, their community, and the world in the name of Jesus Christ (FIRST CORINTHIANS 12:4-7).

Our Story

With a heart to reach the unchurched with the message of Jesus Christ, 2nd Street Community Church (www.2ndstreet.org) launched its first service in Newberg, Oregon, on October 28th, 1990 as an extension ministry of Newberg Friends Church. During the first year, an average of 160 people attended a weekly Sunday service in the Friends Center building at College and 2nd Streets.

A second Sunday morning service was added in 1994 as weekly attendance grew to nearly 300. Along with the growth of 2nd Street came many new challenges including space requirements to handle future growth, staffing to care for congregational needs, and the development of leadership.

As 2nd Street’s ministries matured it was determined that it should become autonomous from its “mother church,” Newberg Friends Church. In 1998 Newberg Friends Church blessed the formalized “birth” of its daughter church, and 2nd Street is now an independent member of Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends Church (www.nwfriends.org), an evangelical Quaker denomination. In September of this same year, in order to meet its growing facility needs, 2nd Street relocated to The Chehalem Armory Center at 620 N. Morton Street in West Newberg.

2nd Street’s Statement of Faith is the Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends Church Statement of Faith and it can be found in its entirety at the following site … or you can pick up a copy at the Community Center on Sunday mornings, at the Church Office during the week, or download it at the following NW Yearly Meeting of Friends Church link …

In 1999, to provide room for the expanding children’s and youth ministries, a 3,500 square foot Youth Building was built at the Chehalem Armory Center site and additional staff members were also hired. Current worship, service and ministry opportunities at 2nd Street include Sunday worship, community groups, Serve-Newberg groups, prayer and discipleship ministries, a monthly “With-God” worship gathering, drama ministries, women’s ministries, children's ministries, student ministries, pastoral counseling, food and household supplies ministry (through Love INC.), recovery ministries and missions ministries.
