What we believe
The Heart of the Matter...
At 2nd Street we believe that Jesus Christ is at the center of all we do. It is our job to spread Jesus’ message with our words and with our lives. Jesus calls us to “bring good news to the poor, to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor” (Luke 4:18-19 NSRV). Jesus puts it more simply when he said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and you shall Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:36-40). This is the core of what we believe, everything else is secondary.
The Holy Spirit and Life Together
We believe that the Holy Spirit is present in active in the lives of all people and it is this Spirit that transforms us and sets us free. We are called, by Jesus, to see other people the way he sees them and to love them the way he loves them. Life with Jesus requires more than church attendance, it requires relationship. Because of this we believe that all people are equal and bear the image of God regardless of one’s station in life, gender, race, ethnicity, or otherwise. Our gathered worship is a place to actively follow God in the presence of others and all are welcome.
The Bible and the Body of Christ
We believe that God speaks to us through all aspects of life (art, music, nature, each other, our work, families,…) but the main way God has spoken into the life of the church throughout history has been through the Bible. Because the Holy Spirit works consistently through the Bible we believe that the Bible is authoritative for the church. It is because of this authority that we take the study of the Bible seriously as a way to listen to what God is saying to God’s followers today.
